A photograph of an outdoor evening science fair on a dark spring night, rows of modest folding-table booths under string lights. At the center booth a demonstration has ignited far beyond its scale: a brilliant lime-green column of flame and glowing vapor erupts from a small tabletop apparatus, rising far above the booth's little canopy and throwing green light across everything. The presenter stands beside it in safety goggles, one hand still on the apparatus, looking up at what she started; the crowd is stepping back, delighted and alarmed, faces lit green. At the back edge of the crowd, a step apart, seen from behind, stands a man in full clown makeup and a grey suit a half size too big — tidy lavender side-parted hair — perfectly still amid the recoil, his hands clasped behind his back holding a small brown paper bag. Every eye is on the flame. Nobody is looking at him.

A guidance number about fifty percent above the estimate, from the company that already sold the scarce thing. The era started on a Thursday.

Move: +24.37% — about $184 billion of market value added in one session

NVIDIA reported on Wednesday evening and told the market to expect roughly eleven billion dollars of revenue in the coming quarter against an expectation near seven. Companies miss guidance constantly; a beat of that proportion, from the only firm selling the scarce input, is a different kind of event. Its chief executive described a trillion dollars of installed data-centre infrastructure converting from general-purpose to accelerated computing, which reads now as the opening statement of the era. The stock gapped above its eventual close and never traded there again: up 24.37%, roughly a hundred and eighty-four billion dollars of market value in a session, more than the entire value of all but a few dozen companies on earth. Five days later it crossed a trillion.

The deeper account

The house convention: a protagonist series headlines when it IS the day. Netscape, Facebook, Knight and GameStop hold the other four such pages; this is the fifth and the largest.

PIGMENT.md's loud shelf reserved an AI-ignition green years of pages ago. This is the day it was kept for, and the shelf entry is now spent.

Every mania page in this encyclopedia — 1995, 2000, 2021 — was eventually answered by a page of reckoning. This one has not been, which is either the difference or the delay.

The index gained 0.88%. The market's breadth that spring was the narrowest in decades: a handful of companies carrying an index of five hundred.

By the time this encyclopedia was written the same company had passed four trillion dollars. This page records the first inch of that line — and its facing page, twenty months later, is the Monday jade asked what the era costs.

The demonstration record — filled in while it burned

The card understates it the way the era's first document should: expected about seven, observed eleven, and climbing — a guidance number half again the estimate, from the only booth selling the scarce thing. The first flash was the biggest; the open printed above the close and the stock never traded there again. Five days later — by Tuesday — the demonstration had outgrown the field entirely.
