The session before this one contained no decisions. The ceasefire was announced while New York slept, the index opened 2.08 percent above the previous close, and every winner spent the following six hours handing back what it had been given in the dark. This Thursday is the answer to that. It opened at 6,783.69 — eighty-eight hundredths of a point above Wednesday's close, a gap of 0.01 percent, which is to say no gap at all — and then went up 0.62 percent in the room, on the tape, during hours when people were actually awake. It closed at 6,824.66. And the VIX, which had been above twenty in every session since at least the twenty-fifth of March and had touched 31.05 on the twenty-seventh, closed at 19.49. It would not close above twenty again for the rest of the month.
The day's protagonist
Amazon AMZN
Move: +5.60% — the best name of a session nobody remembers
Amazon rose 5.60 percent, and the sector it belongs to, consumer discretionary, led all eleven at +1.73. Technology finished at +0.27 percent, eighth of eleven, on a day the index gained 0.62. That ordering is the quiet finding of this page. Through March the market had been unable to value anything because it could not bound the price of energy; the names that carried the first relief were the obvious ones. By the ninth the relief has moved somewhere else — into the companies whose costs are shipping and fuel and whose customers had been paying four dollars for gasoline the week before. Discretionary, industrials, staples and utilities all beat technology on this Thursday. Six sessions later the index would close above seven thousand for the first time and the record would be carried by the heaviest names in it, which is the version that got written down. This session is the other version: the advance broadening out underneath, on a flat open, with the largest company on the page being a shop.
The deeper account
The eighth of April is already in this archive, and its argument is that a session which arrives pre-decided contains nothing to decide. The ceasefire was announced overnight, Asia traded it, and by the time New York opened the price had been set by people in other time zones: up 137 points before a share changed hands, and then six hours of quiet doubt in which Delta gave back most of eleven percent and Tesla turned an opening gain into a loss. That page ends on the observation that a market which has already moved has nothing left to do but distrust itself.
This session opens 0.88 of a point above that one. Eighty-eight hundredths — a gap of one hundredth of one percent, which for practical purposes is a market starting exactly where it stopped. Everything that happened afterwards happened in front of people. The index dipped to 6,761.55, worked up to 6,835.31, and closed 6,824.66, up 41.85. It is not a dramatic number. It is a 0.62 percent gain that took a whole day and was not handed to anybody, and after a session that was nothing but a gift, that is the point.
The volatility index is where the change actually registers. The VIX had been above twenty in every session the feed covers from the twenty-fifth of March onward, peaking at 31.05 on the twenty-seventh with the strait still closed. It came down to 21.04 on the ceasefire day itself — still above twenty, still not quite believing it. On this Thursday it closed 19.49, down 7.37 percent, and then went 19.23, 19.12, 18.36, 18.17, 17.94, 17.48 across the following week. April ended at 16.89. The war left the price on the eighth; the fear of the war left it on the ninth.
Underneath, the leadership had already begun to move. Discretionary led, technology was eighth of eleven, and the largest gainer on the page was a retailer. Six days later the index would take seven thousand for the first time and that record would be carried by the mega-caps, which is the story that survives. But the broadening started here, on a flat open, in a session with no headline in it — which is generally where broadening starts.
