A photograph of a small-town carnival midway at dusk, string lights glowing against the last blue of the sky. At a ring-toss booth, a delighted attendant presses an enormous pale-blue plush bear into the arms of a man in full clown makeup — white face, rose-pink painted spectacle rings, lavender side-parted hair, a grey suit a half size too big — who looks politely stunned, a small brown paper bag still held closed in both hands at his waist. Around him a crowd has turned to cheer: a woman clapping with her hands above her head, a boy mid-jump, men laughing. On the plywood counter, the winning ring sits on the peg. For once, everyone has seen him.

Relief curdling into euphoria

S&P 500 7,736.52 · +136.02 · +1.79% · a record

It began as relief: word that the Strait could reopen took six percent out of oil, and the fear premium left the room before lunch. By afternoon relief had curdled into something happier and less careful — the index took the stairs all day without once looking down, crossed 7,700 by late morning, and closed above it for the first time in history, the Dow over 54,000 an hour behind it. Nobody could quite say it was luck. Everybody checked.

The day's protagonist

Palantir Technologies PLTR

Move: +29.4% — 125.65 → 162.55

Palantir reported spring-quarter earnings and its leadership called the growth "otherworldly." The word did as much work as the numbers: it reassured the market that demand for AI tools is not slowing, and a company named for a seeing-stone was rewarded for prophecy with the day's biggest gain.

The deeper account

The relief came first, and it came from the water. Treasury Secretary Bessent said a deal to reopen the Strait of Hormuz could land within days, and the fear premium bled out of crude — WTI down six percent to 75.32 by the close. It was the second straight day of it: Monday had already added a percent and a half on the same easing. Tuesday opened with the war discount still leaving the room, and never found a reason to stop.

The tape took the stairs. From 7,630.62 at the open the index climbed in order, crossed 7,700 at 11:35 in the morning, and never gave it back — the first close above that line in history, 7,736.52, up 1.79 percent. The Dow added 907.47 points and finished above 54,000 for the first time. Palantir was paid 29.4 percent for one word; Caterpillar beat quietly and took 5.6; the Nasdaq's hundred rose more than three percent behind them.

What made the cheering strange was that the win was earned. About eighty-six percent of the S&P 500 had beaten earnings by that evening; ISM manufacturing had just printed its strongest reading in over four years; the rally stood on profits and a reopening strait, not on hope. Relief is what you feel when the bad thing passes. Euphoria is what happens when you check the ring twice and it is still on the peg.
