Altitude sickness
S&P 500 7,723.55 · −12.97 · −0.17%
The index woke up above its old record, looked down, and spent six hours descending — while the Dow, holding the blue-chip railing, set a record of its own.
The day's protagonist
SpaceX SPCX
Move: −13.6% — 125.33 → 108.27
The first earnings report of SpaceX's life as a public company beat on every line that was supposed to matter: revenue of $7.8 billion for April–June, up 92% from a year earlier, against a $6.8 billion consensus, with the quarterly loss narrowing to $541 million. The market sold it anyway. Spending on the AI segment had reached more than $23 billion in six months — up from $3.3 billion the year before — and executives said the spree was far from over. Two hundred eight million shares changed hands. The market didn't mind the loss; it minded the appetite.
The deeper account
The Dow rose 263 to a second consecutive record close on Iran-deal progress; Reuters reported a proposed Iran–Oman arrangement giving Tehran control over ships entering the Gulf through the Strait of Hormuz.
Disney gained 3.6% after beating third-quarter profit expectations; AMD fell 7% on its own earnings.
The split tape: blue chips at records, the S&P and Nasdaq red — one rope, pulled from both ends.
The artifact
The booth prints your picture at the very top of the wheel. Print Nº 7793 was taken in the first hour — the highest air the tape had ever breathed, 7,793.68 — and by close of day, seventy points lower, nobody had come to claim it.
