Nothing dramatic on the surface — but everything underneath pulled seaward: oil up, yields up, Wednesday's record given back.
The day's protagonist
Brent crude — no symbol.
Move: + nearly 4% on the day
The week's whole rally was built on oil going the other way — the promise of a reopened Strait of Hormuz bleeding the war premium out of energy. Thursday the terms of that promise started to read differently: control over Gulf shipping as Tehran's leverage rather than an open door. Brent jumped nearly 4%, Treasury yields rose with it, and the equity tape sat down. The antagonist of Monday and Tuesday walked back into the room.
The deeper account
Brent crude rose nearly 4% and Treasury yields climbed with it, pressuring rate-sensitive stocks one day after the Dow's record.
Honeywell fell 3% after aerospace results came in well short of forecasts; Warner Bros. Discovery rose on a beat — earnings season still mostly cooperating underneath the macro.
Friday's July payrolls report sat ahead; the week's macro verdict was still out.
The artifact
Yellow up at 9:30, down at 4:00, no change all day — the narrowest water of the week, 44.7 points between the day's marks. The surface said nothing. The current said everything, quietly, and pulled the whole beach seaward while the swimmers swam.

LIFEGUARD DAILY FLAG LOG
- DAY: Thursday — STATION: 2
- 9:30 — yellow up. surface calm, current seaward.
- 4:00 — flag down. no change all day.
- SURFACE: calm. said nothing all day. — CURRENT: seaward. underneath, all of it.
- RESCUES: 0 — ADVISORIES: 1 — HEEDED: (blank)
- QUIET WATER A CALM SURFACE IS NOT A CALM SEA · SWIM NEAR THE STATION
The log kept the market's hours: flag up at the open, down at the close, one advisory posted and nobody out of the water. Oil rose nearly four percent underneath; the tape barely rippled.
