THE WEEK OF SEPTEMBER 21ST – 25TH, 2026

A photograph taken on the open arrival platform of a mountaintop cable-car station late on a clear afternoon. A small bright-red gondola hangs from its steel arm just beyond the platform's edge, arriving. Through its front window a man sits alone on the bench: a white-painted face, flat pink rings painted around his lowered eyes, a round pink ball nose, short lavender hair, a grey suit, a white ruffled collar and a blank badge on a lanyard, with a small brown paper bag, its top rolled over, in both hands on his lap. To the right stands a small glass control booth with an empty office chair inside, and there is nobody on the platform. Behind the gondola the cable drops away steeply past a steel pylon to a small station on the floor of a green valley far below, where a village and a river lie in the haze and a second red gondola waits at the bottom; snow-streaked mountains fill the distance.

THE WEEK

Nobody at the controls

S&P 500 7,743.41 · +92.91 · +1.21% · Friday to Friday

The S&P 500 went into the week at 7,650.50 and came out of it at 7,743.41, up 92.91, its first weekly gain in three. It never once traded below where it started. Its lowest print, 7,662.57 on Thursday morning, was 12.07 points above the line; of the thirty-nine weeks of 2026, only three others — 5 to 9 January, 26 to 29 May and 3 to 7 August — never went below the close they began from. Two weeks ago this book drew the opposite, four days in which the index never once traded above where it began. And almost all of the climbing was done on Monday. Monday rose 114.20, on the news that an AI assistant had become the most downloaded free app in America; the four sessions after it, added together, lost 21.29. Through those four days the bond market sold — the long-bond fund fell every one of them, the ten-year yield reached 5.22 percent on Friday, its highest since 2007, and the thirty-year about 5.50, its highest since 2004 — and the index sat on the high ground Monday had carried it to, crossing and re-crossing the previous day's close, twenty-five times on Tuesday and thirty-two on Thursday, and did not come down off it. Wednesday fell 58.61 and Friday took back 39.28. The week was carried by software that is built to do things by itself, and for most of it nobody was at the controls.

The week's line

Five separate strokes, one per session, drawn left to right against a dashed horizontal line at the prior Friday's close of 7,650.50. Monday opens at 7,692.83, above the line, and closes at 7,764.70, above it; Tuesday opens at 7,770.81, above the line, and closes at 7,764.64, above it; Wednesday opens at 7,761.94, above the line, and closes at 7,706.03, above it; Thursday opens at 7,666.99, above the line, and closes at 7,704.13, above it; Friday opens at 7,709.86, above the line, and closes at 7,743.41, above it. The highest point drawn is 7,781.88 and the lowest 7,665.80. No stroke falls through the line: the lowest point drawn is 7,665.80, 15.30 over it, and every stroke sits above. 7,650.50 · SEP 18 MON · SEP 21 7,764.70 +1.49% TUE · SEP 22 7,764.64 −0.00% WED · SEP 23 7,706.03 −0.75% THU · SEP 24 7,704.13 −0.02% FRI · SEP 25 7,743.41 +0.51%

The week's protagonist

The agent — no symbol.

Move: Meta's Muse at No. 1 on the free chart on Monday, Microsoft's Autopilot on Friday — and the three stocks Monday's ranking lifted, Meta, Intel and AMD, each finished the week up about thirteen percent, within 0.62 of a point of one another

The gains of this week were made by programs that are meant to act for you. On Monday it was Muse, Meta's assistant, which had become the most downloaded free app in America: Meta, Intel and AMD added $352.92 billion between them, AMD crossed a trillion dollars at 10:16, and the index rose 114.20. On Tuesday the same app was blamed for the market's losses — the wire listed twelve companies that live on customers not bothering to switch, from Charles Schwab to Planet Fitness, and they lost $83.52 billion — while Micron rose 5 percent and the Nasdaq 100 made its first record since June. On Wednesday a purchasing managers' index at its highest since 2021 sent the ten-year yield to its highest since 2007 and the index down 58.61, and that evening Mark Zuckerberg told developers that Muse would take a small fee from the transactions it handles; on Thursday Meta rose 4.48 percent, $84.93 billion. On Friday it gave three quarters of that back, and Microsoft had the last word: a rebuilt Copilot with a mode called Autopilot, an agent that keeps working at a task by itself, and $134.92 billion of market value in a session. Akamai, which signed an $11.6 billion contract to sell computing to Anthropic, opened up 13.59 percent and closed up 3.19. On the feed's closes, over the five days, Meta rose 12.94 percent, Intel 13.22 and AMD 12.60. Very little of it came from the people the software is for. On Friday the University of Michigan reported that American consumers expected prices to rise 4.6 percent in the next year and felt worse than at any time since May. The market heard the number, fell through Thursday's close for thirteen minutes, and went back to what it was doing. That is the week in one picture: a little red cabin that has done all its climbing by itself, arriving at the top with one passenger, a paper bag on his lap, and nobody in the booth to meet it.

The week's pigment

Valley haze — the ground the week climbed out of. The blue of the valley in the week's own photograph, far below the cable the gondola has just climbed: the ground Monday lifted the index out of, and the one it never went back down to. Sampled at #A6BCD7 in the haze beyond the pylon and taken toward violet to #A9AFD1, ΔE 7.87 from the sample. Set on a near-black with blue in it, #0F1116: the valley's colour after dark rather than the station's warm concrete shadow, #483937, which sits 16.48 away, declared. Quiet on purpose, as the weeks have been: this page carries five days' pigments beneath it — Flowerpot orange, Seam amber, First-sun gold, Common teal and Second-face green, the loudest run of accents this book has put in one week — and the week's own colour stands behind them. Distance declared honestly, as the ledger requires: ΔE 8.51 to its nearest neighbour among the 415 hexes of the book (#8A94BC), and no closer than 28.41 to any of the five day accents under it.
