The bruise that faded
S&P 500 4,410.13 · +12.19 · +0.28%
Down four percent at lunch, up a quarter of one at the bell, for no reason anyone could name. The biggest intraday recovery since 2008.
The day's protagonist
The buyers, unidentified — no symbol.
Move: From −4.0% to +0.28% — 194 points of range, and no announcement anywhere in it
The bear market of 2022 was three weeks old and had not yet been named. The Fed met in two days, Russian armour was moving toward Ukraine, and by lunchtime the Nasdaq was down almost five percent and squarely in correction. Then it turned — banks first, then energy, then everything — with no headline, no statement, no data. All three indexes closed green; the Dow, down more than eleven hundred points, finished up ninety-nine. It was the largest intraday recovery since November 2008 and it meant nothing at all: a lower low arrived within the week, and 2022 became the worst year since the crisis. But for one afternoon the tape did the thing bear markets are not supposed to do, and did it anonymously.
The deeper account
This is the wing's first of three whipsaws; the October CPI page later in the year is the largest of them, and the tariff pages of 2025 are the loudest.
The house drew this shape more than once in the stroke era — the flat line over a violent day, on the fake-tweet page and the election-night page of the previous wing. The Strange Decade taught the encyclopedia this trick; the Modern Run repeats it at scale.
No explanation was ever agreed. Options positioning, systematic funds, a large buy program, month-end: the candidates are all plausible and none is provable, which is itself the modern condition.
Three weeks earlier, on January 3, the index had closed at 4,796.56 — a record that stood for almost two years.
Wing 6 opens on days like this: the market's plumbing, its platforms and its positioning doing more to the tape than its news.
The artifact
The report is honest about both halves: the car went four wide into the rail at midday, and it finished first, and no one has ever been able to fill in the line between. Banks first, then energy, then everything, with no headline and no author — the biggest recovery since 2008, worth a trophy the size of a thermos. The fine print already knows how the season went.
