The dusk before the number

The first print was the day's high, and everything after was a slow walk downhill — traders squaring up ahead of the inflation report while Alphabet counted out what the future costs.
The day's protagonist
Alphabet GOOG
Move: −3.61% — the capex bill keeps growing
The company now expects to spend $195 to $205 billion building out AI this year, raised from $180 to $190 billion. It has closed a $25 billion debt offering across ten tranches and keeps issuing shares through a $40 billion at-the-market program. On Tuesday the market did the arithmetic — leverage, cash-flow compression, dilution — and marked the stock down 3.61 percent, from 355.84 to 343.00. The future is still being bought; the question the tape asked is what it costs to carry.
The deeper account
Second straight red day, and the shape says more than the size: the market opened at its high and spent six and a half hours backing away from it — the posture of a crowd waiting on a number.
The Hormuz impasse kept oil elevated a second day; the caution was general, the selling specific.
Alphabet's July earnings had already raised the capex guide. Tuesday was the bill being re-read in a quiet room.
The artifact
Every departure on Tuesday's card left on time and left downhill: the 9:30 was the day's high and nothing after it came back. The only line not struck through is tomorrow morning's — the July inflation number, due at 8:30, the one arrival the whole street was actually waiting for. He stayed on the bench past the last bus. The hand note is the day's entire posture.

The index opened at 7,767.51 — the day's high — and never saw it again, closing at 7,728.20, down 0.32 percent, while Alphabet fell 3.61 on its growing capex bill. July CPI arrived the next morning at 8:30.
