Dead calm
S&P 500 7,753.11 · −4.53 · −0.06%
The record run stalled by four and a half points. Under the flat water: the strait stayed shut, Brent jumped five percent, and energy had its loudest day of the summer.
The day's protagonist
The Strait of Hormuz — no symbol.
Move: still closed — Brent +5%, Exxon +4.41%
Iran said Sunday that a transit deal with Oman was in its final stages, then restated the price of reopening the waterway: an end to the naval blockade, sanctions lifted, compensation for war damage. It denied holding direct talks with Washington at all. Hopes for a near-term reopening faded; Brent jumped five percent; Treasury yields pushed to their highest level of the month. Ten sectors held the index almost exactly still while the eleventh — energy — chased crude 4.66 percent higher. The market spent the day between record air above and war-priced oil below, and moved six hundredths of a percent.
The deeper account
Three closing records in six sessions, then this: a pause, not a reversal. The index sat within five points of Friday's all-time high through the whole session.
Berkshire Hathaway rose after topping profit expectations; Intel fell after floating a $15 billion stock sale to fund its AI buildout.
The strait has been the market's background hum since early August. Today it was the whole soundtrack, and the index refused to dance.
The artifact
Ten sectors read the board and stayed in the harbor; the eleventh went out anyway and had the loudest day of its summer. Six hundredths of a percent is what dead calm looks like printed — the ships that matter most sat at anchor on the horizon, holding offshore of a strait that did not reopen, and Brent rose five percent against their patience. The chalk line at the bottom is the whole session's forecast, and it was wrong about tomorrow too.
