The touch
S&P 500 7,677.28 · +24.42 · +0.32%
For five straight sessions the tape had lived entirely on one side of its line, never touching — below it, above it, below, above, below. On Tuesday morning at 10:30 the sixth session reached down and touched: 7,650.92, less than two points under Monday's close, ten minutes beneath the line, and back out. The streak ended the way August does — with one toe. Everything else kept waiting. The chip company reports Wednesday; the chairman speaks Friday; bitcoin touched eighty thousand for the first time in three months and slipped back too. Nobody dove.
The day's protagonist
Nvidia NVDA
Move: +2.16% to 212.98 — the seven-session slide ends the day before the verdict
Nvidia had gone down seven sessions in a row — seven and a half percent from the middle of August, the longest slide the wire copy could find since 2022 — and it did it the way a market clears its throat: quietly, on no single piece of news, into the one event everyone had already circled. The company reports Wednesday after the bell. Its chips are the argument the whole tape has been having for two weeks — Micron's altitude, Monday's semiconductor markdown, the index that falls when silicon does — and Wednesday's report is the closest thing this market has to a verdict before the chairman speaks on Friday. On the eve, the sellers stood down: Nvidia rose 2.16 percent, Micron 2.43, and the Nasdaq led the day at plus two-thirds of a percent. Not conviction — position. You do not dive the day before the water is tested for you.
The deeper account
The streak, for the record, ended at five. Tuesday opened twenty-four points above Monday's close and spent ten minutes of its six and a half hours below it: the 10:30 bar reached 7,650.92 — 1.94 points under the line, the first time in six sessions the tape had touched a prior close at all — and by 10:40 it was back above, and it never went below again. It settled at 7,677.28, up 0.32 percent, twenty-four points over the line it had finally deigned to touch. After five one-sided pages, the archive gets a sixth that touched and survived: the quietest possible way for a streak to die.
The rest of the day was a waiting room. The 10-year eased six basis points to 4.63 percent and the 30-year to 5.17 — the long end's third day of relief on its way into the mountains. Canada answered the weekend's 50 percent American duties with 15 to 50 percent of its own on some twenty billion dollars of steel, dairy, appliances and electronics, effective September 8, crude oil pointedly excluded by both sides — and the tape shrugged, which tells you what it is actually watching. Bitcoin touched eighty thousand in the morning, its first visit in three months, and finished just under seventy-nine — the day's other line touched and let go.
The one crack ran through the consumer. Dick's Sporting Goods missed, cut its guidance, and lost 30.63 percent — the worst wreck on the board since Walmart's, ten days ago, and for the same stated reason: the customer is trading off. Consumer confidence fell to 89.4, its lowest reading since January; new home sales slowed to six hundred seven thousand. The market rose anyway, because the market was not looking at this week. It was looking at Wednesday evening, and then at Friday morning, in the mountains.
The artifact
In at 10:30, partially. Out by 10:40. The tape kept the same times, and the guard stamped the honest verdict: NO INCIDENT.
