The worst December since 1931 ended through a gate marked with pine: the Eve's close was the bear's exact bottom, and it never printed again.
The day's protagonist
The turn — no symbol.
Move: The first four-digit Dow day ever printed — out of the worst December since 1931
December 2018 had gone wrong in every register at once: rate fears, trade war, a government shutdown, and a Treasury secretary phoning the six biggest banks to confirm they had liquidity — reassurance nobody had requested, which therefore terrified everyone. Christmas Eve was a half-session bloodbath, the worst Eve in market history, the S&P a whisker from a twenty-percent bear. Then the day after Christmas opened, dipped below the Eve's close once — a retest, held — and reversed: record holiday sales on the tape, the Fed chair's job declared safe, quarter-end pension money obliged to buy. The Dow finished up 1,086.25, the first thousand-point gain ever printed. The Eve's 2,351 was the exact bottom; it never printed again. The decade's strangest year closed with its best day.
The deeper account
Wing 4 closes on its only page of grace. The decade's shape, complete: two arc-flashes, two platform failures, two phantom crashes, two overnight storms — and at each end, a fall and a recovery.
The Eve-and-Boxing-Day pair is the wing's compressed self-portrait: the era's worst holiday session and its best day ever, forty-eight hours and one closed market apart.
The gain was a genuine record, and the house notes it proudly — records of ascent are celebrated, records of descent noted without ceremony. The Volmageddon page ten months earlier carries the mirror case.
The bear that almost was: −19.8% from September's peak at the Eve's close. The index that couldn't fall the last fifth of the way spent 2019 setting forty new highs.
The next wing is COVID. The record this page set — the thousand-point day — fell in March 2020, in both directions, inside a single week. The strange decade was practice.
The artifact
The sheet keeps the day's whole grammar in four lines: the mark the Eve set, the one step below it at the morning — held — and then the gates, and everyone at once. The worst December since 1931 ends here, through a threshold dressed in pine, with the old year's deepest footprint left under the fresh snow where nobody will step again.
