The toll on the water
S&P 500 7,515.34 · −60.05 · −0.79%
The announcement was a twenty percent protection tax on cargo passing through the Strait of Hormuz, with the United States cast as the waterway's protector. The market's answer was immediate and internally perfect: energy rose 3.01 percent, the best sector by more than two points; technology fell 2.42, the worst; and the S&P 500 gave back 60.05 points to close at 7,515.34, the first real step down from Friday's high of the month. The high of the day was printed inside the opening ten minutes and never approached again — after ten to ten the index did not trade above 7,561.76, and the afternoon is a staircase: 7,540, 7,534, 7,528, 7,525, 7,522, 7,518, and a low of 7,506.41 at half past three. The volatility index rose 14.17 percent, from the lowest close of the month to 17.16, in one session. AppLovin fell 12.65 percent and Sandisk 12.63 — two names down more than twelve and a half on the same afternoon. What this day demonstrates, small as it is, is that the July decline was never really a decline. It was a transfer, and it had a price of admission.
The day's protagonist
AppLovin APP
Move: −12.65% to 442.85 — opened 497.00, low 433.71, and never came back
AppLovin opened at 497.00, fell through the whole session, and closed at 442.85 against a low of 433.71 — down 12.65 percent, on more than twice its recent volume. Sandisk fell 12.63 percent the same afternoon, which is the kind of coincidence that tells you the selling was not about either company. What connects them is that both are leveraged, in different ways, to the assumption that the machines being built this year will pay for themselves next year, and this was the session where the cost of running those machines acquired a number attached to a waterway six thousand miles away. Energy is not usually a story about software. On a day when a fifth of the value of every barrel crossing the Strait of Hormuz was claimed as a fee, it was the only story there was, and everything that consumes power rather than sells it was marked down against it. AppLovin was the sharpest expression of that, falling further in one day than the S&P 500 would fall in the entire month. It closed the month at 395.90, down 23.16 percent from where June ended. On this Monday it simply had the worst day in a room where nearly everyone had a bad one.
The deeper account
A toll is not a tax on a thing; it is a tax on passage. That distinction is the whole session. Nothing was destroyed on the thirteenth of July and nothing was created. A charge was announced on the act of moving oil through a particular twenty-one-mile channel, and within six and a half hours the companies that pump oil were worth three percent more, the companies that consume electricity and shipping and freight were worth two and a half percent less, and the index that contains both of them sagged by the difference, which was eight tenths of one percent.
The path says the market understood this before ten o'clock. The high of the day, 7,565.37, is inside the opening bar; by ten to ten the index had made 7,561.76 and it never saw that level again. From there it is one of the cleanest staircases in the batch — a lower high roughly every forty minutes, 7,553, 7,547, 7,538, 7,534, 7,528, 7,525, 7,522, 7,518, and a low of 7,506.41 at half past three. There is no argument in it anywhere. A market that has repriced something does not need to keep discussing it.
The individual damage was concentrated in exactly the places the logic predicts. AppLovin fell 12.65 percent and Sandisk 12.63; Marvell lost 7.75, Intel 6.12, the semiconductor ETF 4.77, Micron 4.32, AMD 4.21. Nvidia gave back 3.52 percent, which was most of the 4.03 it had gained on Friday, three days after its best close of the month. Meanwhile Microsoft rose 1.53 percent, Intercontinental Exchange 1.78, Amazon 0.80, Apple 0.63. The four or five names that carried the S&P 500 through July were, on this day as on almost every day in this batch, not the names being sold.
The volatility index is the honest summary: 15.03 on Friday, the lowest close of the month, and 17.16 on Monday, a rise of 14.17 percent. That is not fear. That is the price of insurance being marked to a world in which a waterway now has a fee, and it is the second time in three sessions that the record shows the market learning something on a Monday that had been public on the Friday. The month's high was already behind it. The low was thirteen sessions ahead. In between, this is the page where somebody put a booth on the water and started charging.
The artifact
The ledger — what actually happened
| Measure | Close | Change | Marginalia |
|---|---|---|---|
| S&P 500 | 7,515.34 | −60.05 · −0.79% | high 7,565.37 inside the opening ten-minute bar; after 9:50 it never traded above 7,561.76 again · low 7,506.41 at 3:30 · the first step down from Friday's 7,575.39 |
| Energy | +3.01% | the best sector by more than two points, against technology −2.42%, discretionary −1.02%, industrials −0.85% and materials −0.61%. The Dow lost 0.3 percent and the Nasdaq Composite 1.6 — the split is the whole day | |
| AppLovin | 442.85 | −12.65% | opened 497.00, low 433.71. Sandisk fell 12.63% the same session; Marvell −7.75%, Intel −6.12%, the semiconductor ETF −4.77%, Micron −4.32%, AMD −4.21% |
| Nvidia | 203.53 | −3.52% | giving back most of Friday's +4.03% in a single session, three days after its best close of the month |
| VIX | 17.16 | +14.17% | from 15.03, the lowest close of July, to 17.16 in one day. Volume 15.91 billion shares against a twenty-session average of 21.83 billion; decliners led 1.63 to one on the New York Stock Exchange and two to one on the Nasdaq |
| The Strait of Hormuz | 20% | a protection tax on cargo through the strait, announced by the President, positioning the United States as the waterway's protector. Oil rose on the news; this archive does not state a barrel price for the session, because its only source for one has proved unreliable | |
| Microsoft | 390.99 | +1.53% | up on the day, as were Intercontinental Exchange +1.78%, Amazon +0.80% and Apple +0.63%. The four names holding the index up in July were, again, not the ones being sold |
