The flash that stayed
S&P 500 7,798.99 · +50.49 · +0.65%
Producer prices sat still, the hike odds faded, and the index printed 7,800 for the first time in its history — led by the chips whose whole business is not forgetting.

Move: +13.67% — memory leads the record
The flash-memory maker jumped 13.67 percent — 1,344.29 to 1,528.11, on nearly twice Wednesday's volume — and led the entire S&P on the day the index closed higher than it ever has. Micron followed at +4.23 percent; Meta and Microsoft carried the flanks. Tame producer prices had settled the September question by breakfast, so the market spent the day on its favorite trade instead: the chips that remember. An encyclopedia of trading days notes the symmetry — the record was set by the business of keeping records.
The deeper account
Third record close of August: 7,736.52 on the 4th, 7,757.64 on the 7th, 7,798.99 today. The month keeps writing over its own high-water marks.
PPI for final demand was unchanged in July against an expected +0.2% rebound — services +0.2% and construction +2.2% offset by goods −0.7%. The annual rate, 4.7%, undercut consensus; tame wholesale inflation cemented expectations that the Fed will not raise rates in September. Oil easing toward $87 helped.
The 2013-04-23 page in this archive records a flash that wasn't there — a false tweet, a crater, a recovery within minutes. This page is its stated kin and its answer: a flash that held. Flash memory keeps its charge with the power off; so did the day.
The artifact
The photograph of this day shows Breakout with the hammer, and the scorecard is what the midway wrote down: the puck touched 7,800 for the first time in the game's history, the bell rang, and the mark settled a point beneath it — still the best ever recorded, Friday's card retired after four days. Producer prices sat still that morning and the hike odds faded; the swing was Sandisk's, up 13.67, with the whole memory table pulling the handle behind it. Most flashes fade by the close. This one stayed.
