The approach
S&P 500 7,674.37 · +33.21 · +0.43%
Nothing was decided on Friday, which was the point. The Dow rose a percent on the stocks you hold while you wait, the long bond leaked back to 5.273 — the buyback's nine basis points of relief fully unwound — and the index spent a fourth straight session entirely on one side of its line, above it this time, never touching. Six days to the mountain. The whole tape stood at the landing and watched for a boat that had not come in yet.
The day's protagonist
The keynote — no symbol.
Move: does not exist yet — first Warsh keynote, Friday morning, Aug 28
The speech has not been written, and it ran the week anyway. Kevin Warsh, chairman since May, gives his first Jackson Hole keynote next Friday morning, and Friday's tape arranged itself around what he might say: the Dow rose 517.80 points, up 0.98 percent, on Merck and Johnson & Johnson — the stocks you hold while you wait — and the S&P added 0.43 percent without once touching Thursday's close, its fourth consecutive session lived entirely on one side of its line. The bond market voted the other way. The 30-year finished the week at 5.273 percent, above where it stood before Wednesday's buyback announcement — the issuer's intervention fully unwound inside three sessions — and the 10-year tested twenty-month highs at 4.74. The week's ledger read: stocks down 1.4 percent, the Nasdaq down two, the long bond up despite its own government bidding for it, and crypto up twenty-two percent in the corner like a sideshow that wandered onto the main stage. What the mountain is being asked to settle is not just the price of money. The chairman taking the podium was appointed in May by the administration whose Treasury spent this week buying the long end and promising to collapse a foreign government, and the press spent the same week writing about central-bank independence. On Friday the market did the only thing a market can do with a question like that: it drifted upward, quietly, in the reflected light of an answer it hasn't heard.
The deeper account
The alternation, for the record: Tuesday's session hung below its line all day; Wednesday's floated above; Thursday's hung below; Friday's floated above — four consecutive sessions, four one-sided pages, alternating sides, the prior close never once touched. Friday's page entered twenty-five points over the line, crested at 7,697.11 just before noon, walked back through a quiet afternoon, and lifted at the end. Up 33.21, waiting.
What the week settled: nothing. The 30-year began it at Monday's 5.31 percent — the best offer since 2007 — was bought back to 5.195 by Wednesday's intervention, and ended at 5.273 on Friday, above where the intervention found it. The Dow's 517.80 points came from Merck and Johnson & Johnson; the S&P's week still closed 1.4 percent lower, the Nasdaq's two percent lower. All files forwarded to Wyoming.
The independence question rides along: the buyback that failed was the Treasury's; the chairman it pressures was appointed by the Treasury's administration in May; his first keynote now has to answer for both — the price of money and who gets to set it. Iran's president signaled Tehran wants the war over soon, and oil sat still, Friday's one quiet market. And in the corner, the sideshow got loud: crypto up more than twenty percent on the week into the debut, Robinhood and Coinbase outrunning every bank on the board. Six days to the mountain.
