Taken at his word
S&P 500 7,711.76 · −19.23 · −0.25%
At ten o'clock a new chairman said that the Fed's predominant focus right now should be on prices, and by eleven the S&P 500 was up half a percent and pleased with him. It closed down a quarter of one percent, at 7,711.76, nineteen points under Thursday. That number is the worst witness the day had. Gold fell 3.26 percent. Silver fell 4.37. Utilities fell 1.09 while the banks rose 0.37. The odds on a rate hike in September went from thirty-five percent to fifty-seven. Everything that exists to price a central banker moved by whole percentages, all in the same direction, and the index everybody quotes moved a quarter of one.
The day's protagonist
Gold GLD
Move: −3.26% to 408.81 — thirteen times the index's move, in the same session
Gold is what you hold when you do not believe the people in charge of the money, so it is the right instrument to read on the morning a new man takes charge of it. It opened at 422.18 and sat flat for half an hour. At ten o'clock, inside the thirty minutes of the speech itself, it fell to 415.24. Then it did the thing worth noticing: it came back, to 419.52 by eleven — the same ten minutes in which the S&P printed its high of the day. Both of them had spent an hour concluding he was softer than advertised. Both changed their minds around half past eleven and neither came back. Gold made 414.66 by noon, 409.11 within the next half hour, ground down to 407.62 by half past two and closed at 408.81, off 13.79 on the day. The honest context makes it larger rather than smaller. This was not gold's worst session of 2026 — eight have been worse, and the thirtieth of January took 10.27 percent off it in a single day. Its high close this year was 495.90 on the twenty-ninth of January, and it is 17.56 percent below that tonight; silver, which topped at 105.60 the day before, is 43.15 percent below its own. The metals have spent all of 2026 being argued out of a position. Friday was not the argument. Friday was somebody new making it, and being believed inside half an hour.
The deeper account
The session is easy to describe and easy to misread. It opened at 7,735.17, four points above Thursday, and drifted for half an hour. Warsh began speaking at ten. By eleven o'clock the index had run to 7,771.48 — up 40.49, half of one percent — which is a market saying it has just heard a man who is not going to be difficult. It spent the next four hours taking that back. The low, 7,700.91, printed at ten minutes to three, seventy points under the high. Then nothing happened at all: from three o'clock to the bell the tape held inside a thirteen-point band and closed at 7,711.76, down 19.23, down a quarter of one percent. Whatever the argument was, it had finished by lunch. The close sits 87.23 under the record of the thirteenth, and the week still finished up 0.49 percent.
What the quarter of a percent concealed was a rotation with a textbook shape. Computed from the ten sector funds' own closes: discretionary up 1.15, energy up 0.58, staples up 0.41, financials up 0.37, and materials, health care, real estate, industrials, utilities and technology all lower — technology worst at 1.55, utilities next at 1.09. Four green, six red, and 2.70 percentage points from best to worst on a day the index moved a quarter of one. Banks bought and bond proxies sold is not a mood; it is the specific trade you put on when you believe money is about to cost more. The bond market said the same thing in its own units, the two-year up eight basis points and the ten-year up four to 4.72 percent, and the futures market said it in the plainest units available: the odds of a twenty-five basis point hike in September closed at 57 percent, having been 35 the day before. Nobody was frightened while this happened. The VIX fell.
Two of the day's largest moves had nothing to do with Wyoming. PayPal fell 12.71 percent to 53.655 because Advent and Stripe walked away from a bid for it — an offer reported at $60.50 a share, which PayPal's own board had judged too low, so the stock finished the day six dollars and eighty-five cents beneath the price it had refused. Marvell fell 10.29 percent after earnings; the wire put that at seven, and the feed is the arbiter here as always. The third move belongs to this archive rather than to the news. Nvidia, which on Thursday had the biggest day of its year at 8.77 percent and was written up on this page as the one bright thing, gave back 4.58 — more than half of it — and never took part in the morning at all. It made its high inside the first half hour and fell for the remaining five and a half. At eleven o'clock, while the index was printing the top of the day and deciding that it liked the new chairman, Nvidia had already been falling for ninety minutes. It was the first thing in the room to have made up its mind.
The artifact
A touchstone is the flat black slate a jeweller rubs metal across. The streak tells you what the metal is, whatever it was called on the way to the counter. On Friday the room ran the test on a statement instead of a piece of gold, and read it off the only instruments that answer that question: the metals, the coin, the banks, the utilities. All six needles agreed. The index, which is not one of them, moved a quarter of one percent and was quoted everywhere.

The ledger — what actually happened
| Measure | Close | Change | Marginalia |
|---|---|---|---|
| S&P 500 | 7,711.76 | −19.23 · −0.25% | opened 7,735.17 · high 7,771.48 at 11:00, up 40.49 and half a percent, one hour after the speech began · low 7,700.91 at 2:50 · and then a final hour inside a thirteen-point band, which is what a market looks like once it has finished arguing |
| Gold | 408.81 | −3.26% | the fund's own close. Flat until ten, down seven dollars during the speech, recovered to 419.52 by eleven — the index's high — and then down all afternoon to 407.62 before the close |
| The chorus | −4.37% / −3.05% | silver and the bitcoin fund: the same trade in two other sizes. Every asset held against the value of money was sold on the day the new custodian of it said prices come first | |
| The rotation | +0.37% / −1.09% | banks and utilities, computed from the funds' own closes. Real estate fell 0.45 with the utilities. Buying the rate-takers and selling the bond proxies is not a mood — it is the specific trade for money about to cost more | |
| The spread | 2.70 points | discretionary +1.15 at the top to technology −1.55 at the bottom; four sectors green, six red. The distance across the board was ten times the distance the index travelled | |
| September | 57% | the odds of a twenty-five basis point HIKE at the September meeting, up from 35 percent on Thursday. The two-year rose eight basis points, the ten-year four, to 4.72 percent | |
| Nvidia | 217.54 | −4.58% | more than half of Thursday's +8.77 percent handed back. It made its high in the first half hour and fell for the rest of the day — at eleven o'clock, while the index was printing the top, it had already been falling for ninety minutes |
| PayPal | 53.66 | −12.71% | Advent and Stripe walked away from a bid reported at $60.50 a share, an offer PayPal's board had judged too low. The stock closed 6.845 beneath the price it refused |
| The fear gauge | 14.43 | the VIX fell 0.55 percent on a down day. Nothing about Friday frightened anybody. It was a repricing, and repricings are calm |
