A photograph of the same small laundromat as the night before, one evening later: warm fluorescent light inside, deep blue dusk in the plate-glass windows, the plain round clock still on the bare wall. The row of steel front-loading machines stands quiet, and one of them has finished — its porthole door hangs wide open toward the room, the empty drum lit and still. A man in full clown makeup and a grey suit a half size too big stands in front of it, seen entirely from behind, feet together, head level, looking into the open drum. His hands are clasped behind his back, both holding a small brown paper bag closed. On the folding counter beside him the finished load is stacked in neat folded piles — white, beige, pale blue, grey — with one bright red-orange shirt folded on top, the only strong color in the room. At the far end, beyond the glass, a customer is leaving with a full laundry basket on their hip. Nobody is looking at him.

The one bright thing

S&P 500 7,730.99 · +55.29 · +0.72%

The drum stopped overnight and the door came open on a yes. Nvidia rose 8.77 percent to 228.05 — its biggest single day of the year, its best close since May, and eight dollars better than the price the after-hours tape had put on it at ten o'clock the night before. The index it is supposed to carry rose seventy-two hundredths of one percent. The S&P added 55.29 points to 7,730.99 and finished sixty-eight points under the record it set on the thirteenth. The verdict was real. It was also narrow enough to fold.

The day's protagonist

Nvidia NVDA

Move: +8.77% to 228.05 — the biggest one-day gain of its year

It reported on Wednesday into a closed market and the closed market guessed 219.85. On Thursday the open market opened it at 222.86, ran it to 230.47 by twenty past one, took five dollars back by ten to three, and closed it at 228.05 — 18.39 up on the day, 8.77 percent, the largest single-day gain it has posted in 2026 and its highest close since the fourteenth of May. That is a company answering the only question that had been asked of it: whether the pace was the peak. The answer was no, in the amount of a hundred and eight billion dollars of guidance. What the day did not answer is the second question, the one nobody asks out loud on a green day — whether a market can be carried this far by one load of laundry. The Nasdaq rose 1.57 percent. The Dow rose 0.20. Somewhere between those two numbers is the whole argument.

The deeper account

Wednesday's page ended mid-cycle on purpose: the report landed minutes after the bell, into a market that had already locked its doors, and the drum spun on a page that could not say what was in it. Thursday opened the door. Nvidia gapped up 6.3 percent, ran to 230.47 by twenty past one, gave five dollars back through the early afternoon and closed at 228.05 — up 18.39, up 8.77 percent, the biggest single day it has had this year. The overnight tape had marked it at 219.85 and the daylight tape disagreed by eight dollars in the company's favour. That is the rarer half of an earnings verdict: not the gap, which is the night's opinion, but the close, which is the day's.

The index went along for seventy-two hundredths of a percent. It took the same route the stock did, in miniature and with worse timing: a 34-point gap up, a first-ten-minute low at 7,689.89, a high of 7,741.27 at ten past one, and then a give-back so complete that at ten minutes to three the tape stood at 7,710.17 — seventeen cents from where it had opened five and a half hours earlier. The last hour put 55.29 points on the board for the day and left the close at 7,730.99, ten under the session high and sixty-eight under the record set two weeks ago. It was the best day since August 4 and it did not get the index anywhere it had not already been.

Where the day went is legible in the width of it. The Nasdaq rose 1.57 percent; the Dow rose 0.20; Bloomberg's headline had the S&P rising while every sector but one fell. Salesforce, which reported the same evening, rose 22.60 percent; CrowdStrike rose 20.49. And Micron — the memory name that jumped four and a half percent after hours Wednesday on Nvidia's supply commitments doubling to 279 billion dollars — finished the regular session down 0.92, the entire read-through handed back inside a day. One load came out bright. The rest of the wash came out clean, folded, and grey, and somebody who was not in the chair all night carried it out the door. Jackson Hole convened while all of this happened, and the man who has to speak on Friday morning spent Thursday listening to a colleague call inflation too hot.

The cycle card, machine Nº 7 — completed

The same card as last night, filled to the bottom. The needle has moved from SPIN to DONE, the door opened at 9:30, and the load came out brighter than the glass had shown it. It was claimed at four o'clock. He was there for all of it and none of it was his.

Wednesday's card said unclaimed items become the property of the morning. The morning did not get to keep this one. It was claimed at four o'clock, by whoever had put it in.
