Nobody there
S&P 500 2,386.13 · −324.89 · −11.98%
On Sunday evening the Federal Reserve spent its entire 2008 playbook before Monday's bell — zero, and seven hundred billion — and the futures went limit-down anyway. This was the weekend the country closed. When the market opened it fell twelve percent, the worst day since 1987, and the fear index printed the highest close it has ever recorded. There was no performance that day. There was nobody to perform for.
The day's protagonist
The empty street — no symbol.
Move: −11.98% — the worst day since Black Monday, into a country that had closed over the weekend
On Sunday evening the Federal Reserve cut to zero and announced seven hundred billion dollars of purchases: the entire 2008 response, spent before Monday's bell. The futures went limit-down anyway. This was the weekend everything closed — schools, restaurants, offices, borders — the weekend the CDC advised against gatherings of fifty and the country began counting in fifteen-day units. The market's answer was minus eleven point nine eight percent, the worst session since 1987, and that evening the VIX closed at 82.69, the highest reading it has ever printed, higher than any single day of the financial crisis. The planes stopped. For the first time in living memory the sky over the cities was quiet, and it is that grey — the underside of a wing — that this page wears.
The deeper account
On Sunday evening, before Asia opened, the Federal Reserve cut its rate to zero and announced seven hundred billion dollars of purchases — the entire 2008 response, spent in one press release, before the bell. The futures went limit-down anyway. Some falls are not about liquidity. The 1987 page in this book records a fall whose morning-after rescue was thirty words from the Fed; here the rescue came first, at full scale, and the market fell twelve percent on top of it.
The session halted at the open — the third of four market-wide breakers that month, after twenty-three years without one — and closed six points off its low: down 11.98 percent, the worst day since Black Monday 1987, a page this book already keeps. The Dow lost 2,997.10 points, the largest point decline in its history at the time, entered in the ledger unsealed, as the house rule requires of records of descent. That evening the VIX settled at 82.69, the highest close the fear index has ever recorded, past anything 2008 printed. The planes stopped. For the first time in living memory the sky over the cities went quiet.
Retail was two weeks into the job. He is in the photograph of this day — across the ring, at the mouth of the performers' tunnel, where the light gives out. He stayed. Five sessions later the market found its floor. That page is next, and it is quiet.
The artifact
Three lines of chalk and a fourth that was never finished. The resume line stayed blank.

Chalk capitals, the troupe's own hand. Transcribed in full.
THE PLACARD AT THE GATE
- NO PERFORMANCE TONIGHT
- ALL TICKETS WILL BE HONORED
- RESUME: ________ — never filled in
Nobody wrote the date in, because nobody knew it. The market found its floor five sessions later. Most of the country's blanks stayed blank far longer.
