Eight years earlier the same market went limit-down overnight and reversed by dawn. This time there was nothing to reverse: it opened high and climbed for five and a half hours.
The day's protagonist
The overnight, again — no symbol.
Move: A record close, and the best post-election session the index has ever had
Eight years earlier, on a page this book keeps in verdigris, the same market fell five percent overnight on election returns and had unwound the whole thing by the opening bell. This time there was no reversal to perform. Futures rose through the night, the cash market opened eighty-two points above the previous close, dipped once in the first half hour, and then climbed for five and a half hours without ever seriously threatening to give it back. It finished at a record — the best post-election day in the index's history — with small caps up 5.8% and the fear index collapsing. The encyclopedia records mechanism rather than politics, and the mechanism is this: a market's worst fear is not a result but an unresolved one. By half past nine the question had an answer, and the answer mattered less than the having.
The deeper account
This was the wing's first page with a real intraday record. The feed's ten-minute history begins somewhere between the previous page in this wing and this one; everything before is drawn from two documented prices, everything after can be recorded breath by breath.
The 2016 page and this one are deliberate counterparts, palette included — weathered copper then, clear sky now; a night that had to be undone then, a morning that needed no undoing here.
The dip at 9:50 to 5,870.58 was the only hesitation in the session. It lasted twenty minutes.
The house takes no political position, in this wing or any other. What is recorded is that uncertainty carried a price, and the price was paid back in a single session.
The index gained roughly 2.5% and the small-cap index 5.8% — the widest such gap in years, and the tell that the market was repricing domestic activity rather than the world.
The artifact
The whole night fits on one sheet because nothing had to be undone. Eight years earlier the same watch spent its dark hours limit-down and its morning reversing; this log records only word arriving, an answer taking shape, and a watchman with nothing to do about it. By 6:30 there was one sheet to pin. The market opened eighty-two points above the question and spent five and a half hours agreeing with itself.
