A photograph of a small-town night fair lit by jade-green paper lanterns and strings of pale green bulbs. A small astonished crowd is clustered around a plain folding table where a skinny teenager is lifting an enormous grey stone with nothing but a long wooden plank over a small block — one hand pressing the lever down, his face matter-of-fact — while one man crouches to look under the stone and a woman covers her mouth. Behind them, fully lit and completely deserted, stands the strongman's platform with its painted barbells, and on its steps sits a huge man in an old-fashioned strongman's leotard, head down, alone. At the back edge of the crowd, a step apart, seen from behind, stands a man in full clown makeup and a grey suit a half size too big — tidy lavender side-parted hair — perfectly still, his hands clasped behind his back holding a small brown paper bag. Every eye is on the lever. Nobody is looking at him.

The cheaper method

Nobody could verify the training numbers that Monday. It did not matter: the possibility alone was worth five hundred and eighty-nine billion dollars.

The day's protagonist

A cheaper method NVDA

Move: −16.97% — about $589 billion of market value, the largest single-day loss any company has ever suffered

Over the weekend a Chinese laboratory released a reasoning model that performed near the Western frontier, reportedly trained for a small fraction of the usual cost, with its weights published for anyone to download. The market's entire AI thesis rested on one load-bearing assumption — that frontier capability requires enormous quantities of the most expensive chips on earth — and here was an argument against it, available for free, on a Sunday. Nobody could verify the training figures by Monday's open and nobody waited to. NVIDIA fell almost seventeen percent and lost roughly five hundred and eighty-nine billion dollars of market value: the largest single-day loss in the history of markets, more than double the previous record, which the same company had set four months earlier. Within a week most of it was back. Within a year the spending it threatened had risen.

The deeper account

The house convention holds: the protagonist series headlines when it IS the day. NVIDIA holds two such pages in one wing — the ignition and the doubt — and they are the only matched pair of that kind in the book.

The loud shelf in PIGMENT.md reserved a DeepSeek jade before this page existed. Both AI colors on that shelf, lime and jade, are now spent, twenty months and one thesis apart.

The index fell 1.46% and recovered most of its opening loss. The concentration is the story: a single company's doubt, not a market's.

The record it set is a record of loss, and the house does not seal those — the same rule that leaves the Dow's −1,175 and the VIX's 82.69 unstamped in earlier wings.

Whether the argument was right remains open. The stock recovered in days; the question it raised — whether intelligence is expensive — is still being priced.

The plans sheet — from the free stack at the foot of the table

It arrived over a weekend, free to take, impossible to check — and the checking did not matter. The sheet claims same lift, one hand, and by Monday's open the crowd had already moved; the strongman's booth repriced by five hundred and eighty-nine billion dollars before anyone had tried the plank themselves. The stamp is honest: unverified. So was the selling.

NVIDIA opened at 124.80, was gouged to 116.70 in the first hour, and closed at 118.42 — down 16.97 percent, roughly $589 billion, the largest single-day loss any company has ever suffered, on 818.8 million shares. The index fell 1.46 percent and recovered most of it: one booth's doubt, not a market's. Within a week most of the stone was back.
